The hand-built two-door 300 S (W188) was introduced at the Paris Salon in October 1951. It was available as a 2-seat roadster, 2+2 coupé, and cabriolet. These exclusive cars were built to order to meet the demands of the wealthiest individuals in the world. Fitted luggage, specifically designed for the boot, came as standard with the car.
The 300 Sc (W188) appeared in 1955. Introduced at the Frankfurt show, the 300 Sc featured the detuned engine from the 300 SL, including the Bosch fuel injection. Although only 175bhp was claimed from the 2,996cc in-line OHC engine, the fuel injection was rumoured to give the engine an output of over 200bhp. An ‘Einspritzmotor’ badge on the rear bumper explained to ordinary motorists why and how they had just been passed. Mercedes-Benz’s “low-pivot” independent suspension was fitted in the rear, for increased ride comfort.
This beautiful example, built in 1957 and delivered to New York, is one of only 98 coupés built on the 300 Sc chassis between 1955 and 1958.
