SLIDER: 1933 Stutz with Lancefield Coachwork

The Stutz Motor Company began production of luxury cars in 1911, in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA – initially under the name of the Ideal Motor Car Company. An Ideal car placed 11th in the 1911 Indianapolis 500, thus earning the slogan “the car that made good in a day”. A year later, the founder, Harry C. Stutz, renamed the company Stutz Motor Company.  Its most famous early car was the Stutz Bearcat, a four-cylinder car with four valves per cylinder – one of the first cars to be equipped with a multi-valve engine.

The car in our picture was bodied by Lancefield Coachworks of Queen’s Park, London W10. Founded in 1921, Lancefield bodied expensive chassis, including those of Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Lagonda and Isotta Fraschini – and were normally known for the sporting nature of their bodies. This body, however, seems to have rather more formal lines.
